About Tomaru

Tomaru is a vocabulary app for iOS and Android. It comes with exam and everyday word lists and uses FSRS to decide when each word comes back; its core vocabulary features are free forever, with no ads.

What is Tomaru?

  • Platforms: apps for iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). The website previews every official word list and hosts the help center and articles.
  • Word lists: JLPT, TOPIK, EPS-TOPIK, HSK 3.0, Spanish and other lists, each word with an English explanation, part of speech and example sentences. See all word lists.
  • Reviews: the open-source FSRS algorithm decides when each word comes back from your answers, with no settings to tune.
  • Cost: cards, reviews, official word lists, scheduling and stats are free forever, with no ads; AI extras are part of an optional paid plan. See plans and pricing.

Where does the name come from?

"Tomaru" comes from the Japanese 記憶に留まる, "to stay in memory". The point is not to cram many words in a day but to keep the ones you learn.

Who makes Tomaru?

Tomaru is built and run by the Tomaru team. The developer details are listed on the App Store and Google Play pages.

How are the word lists made?

Lists are compiled from word lists or vocabulary targets published by exam bodies and governments, or from word-frequency data, and then given explanations, parts of speech and example sentences. Where an exam body publishes no list (the JLPT and TOPIK, for example), we say so. The process is described in How Tomaru prepares official vocabulary decks.

Where does the learning data in articles come from?

Figures labelled "Tomaru anonymized learning data" come from review records in the app, aggregated anonymously and published only as rough ranges (for example, "about 60% remembered after a next-day review"). They contain no personal data. This is internal data, not a peer-reviewed study; when we cite research, we link the original paper.

How are articles written?

  • Articles are written by the Tomaru editorial team. When an article compares vocabulary apps, Tomaru is one of them, and the article says so at the top.
  • Prices, free tiers and ads for other apps come only from their official websites and store listings, with the date we checked.
  • If you find a mistake or an outdated fact, email support@tomaruai.app; once we confirm it, we correct the article and update its date.
