How Many Words for Each JLPT Level? N5 to N1 Word Counts and Sources
JLPT stopped publishing word lists in 2010. The last official figures were about 800 words for the old level 4 (now N5), 1,500 for level 3 (N4), 6,000 for level 2 (N2) and 10,000 for level 1 (N1). Full table with kanji and study hours, the official sources, and which N5 words learners forget most.

Short answer: the JLPT has not published word lists since the test was revised in 2010. The last official numbers come from the old test: about 800 words for N5, 1,500 for N4, 6,000 for N2 and 10,000 for N1. N3 was a new level in 2010 and never had an official count; it sits between N4 and N2.
The next JLPT is on December 6, 2026, nine weeks from now.
JLPT word counts by level
| New level | Old level | Official vocabulary (old test) | Kanji (old test) | Study hours (old test) | Tomaru deck | Tomaru cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| N5 | Level 4 | about 800 | about 100 | about 150 | N5, 700 | 700 |
| N4 | Level 3 | about 1,500 | about 300 | about 300 | N4, 664 | 1,364 |
| N3 | new in 2010 | not published | not published | not published | N3, 2,075 | 3,439 |
| N2 | Level 2 | about 6,000 | about 1,000 | about 600 | N2, 1,736 | 5,175 |
| N1 | Level 1 | about 10,000 | about 2,000 | about 900 | N1, 2,659 | 7,834 |
The vocabulary, kanji and hour figures are the old test's certification criteria, and the level mapping (old 4 to N5, old 3 to N4, old 2 to N2, old 1 to N1, N3 new) is from the JLPT's own comparison chart (JLPT, PDF). Tomaru's five decks barely overlap; together they hold about 7,800 different words.
The old figures are cumulative: "about 6,000 words for level 2" includes the words from levels 3 and 4.
What the JLPT says now
No official list since 2010. The JLPT FAQ explains that after the 2010 revision the organisers decided that publishing the test specifications (出題基準) was "not necessarily appropriate" (JLPT FAQ). Every N-level word list you find today, including Tomaru's, is compiled by someone else.
The current descriptors are about tasks, not counts. The official "N1–N5: Summary of Linguistic Competence" describes N5 as being able to understand some basic Japanese and N1 as understanding Japanese used in a variety of circumstances (JLPT). It gives no word totals.
So the old numbers are still the only official anchor.
What our review data shows for N5
Words differ a lot in difficulty. In Tomaru's anonymous learning data, some words are almost never forgotten, while the hardest ones are forgotten by about three in ten learners.
N5 words learners forget most often
| Word | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 葉書 | はがき | postcard |
| 二十歳 | はたち | 20 years old |
| 出す | だす | to take out, to send |
| 北 | きた | north |
| 昨夜 | さくや | last night |
| 遠い | とおい | far |
| 着る | きる | to wear (on the upper body) |
| 曲がる | まがる | to turn |
Irregular readings (二十歳 as はたち rather than にじゅっさい) and verbs whose use differs from English (出す for sending a letter, 着る only for clothes worn on the upper body) are the usual trouble spots. Learn 一日 to 十日, 二十日 and 二十歳 as one set rather than one by one.
How long does each level take?
At 20 new words per study day, the N5 deck takes about 35 study days, N5 plus N4 about 70, and everything up to N3 about 170.
Nine weeks before the December 6 exam, 20 new words a day adds up to about 1,250 words. That is enough to finish N5 and N4, or to make real progress on N3, as long as you also keep up with the reviews.
