How do you import decks and history from Anki?
You can import Anki deck files (.apkg) into Tomaru using the web application. The import tool reads your file locally inside your browser and transfers your decks, card content, and review logs directly to your Tomaru account.
Importing preserves your historical study record. Your cards do not reset to new status; instead, their past review logs enter Tomaru's FSRS scheduler so your existing study habits and review intervals carry over intact across iOS, Android, and the web.
Which target and explanation languages are supported on import?
While Tomaru supports 6 target languages overall, the .apkg import tool supports a specific subset of target and explanation languages:
| Language category | Supported languages for .apkg import | Unsupported languages for .apkg import |
|---|---|---|
| Target languages (studied) | English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese | French, Spanish, German |
| Explanation languages | English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Indonesian, Hindi | None |
If you attempt to import an Anki deck for French, Spanish, or German, the import tool will not process the file. Vocabulary lists for those languages must be created using Tomaru's built-in capture tools or installed from the ready-made public library.
How do you import an Anki .apkg file?
To import your collection, log into your account on a web browser and open your settings menu:
- Open settings in the Tomaru web application.
- Select the Anki import control and choose your
.apkgfile. - Allow your browser to process the file locally and upload the data.
- Access your imported study plan, decks, and cards across all synced devices.
Once processing completes, your imported collection appears as an active study plan. Every imported card enters the standard FSRS schedule immediately, using your past review history to calculate current due dates.
What data transfers during an import?
The import process transfers both card content and scheduling state:
- Card content: Words, definitions, example sentences, and notes contained within your Anki cards.
- Review logs: The full historical record of every review attempt, rating, and interval, preserving your memory profile for future FSRS optimizations.
